Martha Jones is my Homegirl!!!!OMG!!1
I spent this weekend at the Catholic National Justice & Peace Network Conference in Swanwick, Derbyshire, of which maybe more later, but not before I tell of by far the most important thing I found out there, namely:

FREEMA AGYEMAN WENT TO MY CHURCH!!!!!!!!!!OMG!!SQUEEEEEEE!!!!!

I knew she'd grown up on the Woodberry Down estate round the corner from St. Thomas More's, Manor House, which was my regular for several years when I was in London either side of the turn of the Millenium, so I'd wondered. But at the conference I bumped into someone I knew from St. TM, and she confirmed that Freema was indeed a regular at the parish until she moved to Cardiff for filming, and had in fact given them a signed photo of herself with the Doctor! (Barbara was actually Deputy Head at Freema's school!)

Aaaaah! How did I manage not to meet her? Must have gone to a different Mass, for surely I would have noticed such an unsurpassed beauty! But there are combined services at Easter and the like, so in all probability,

I'VE SUNG TO A CONGREGATION THAT HAD FREEMA AGYEMAN IN IT!!!!!!

Apparently I did, without even knowing it! Perhaps St. Thomas More, amongst his other duties, is the patron saint of HOTT! I don't think the Vatican mention that bit though.

That is really interesting, because it bears on something I've been wondering for a while:

In Gridlock, one of the key moments is the entire population singing "The Old Rugged Cross". I was a little less moved by it than some people because it's not a hymn that is particularly part of the Irish Catholic tradition, as shared by Ardal O'Hanlon and myself; but I allowed myself to be carried along by the moment. I was amused that David Tennant, whose religious upbringing surely must have included that hymn, had to play the one character to whom it was utterly alien.

But I wondered if Freema Agyeman was, like me, someone who didn't particularly know "The Old Rugged Cross"? I had assumed (since I knew that one of her parents was Iranian) that she might not even be from a Christian background, but sounds like I was wrong about that. Was "The Old Rugged Cross" a feature of your parish hymnal?

Not that I recall. The music varied somewhat from mass to mass, but I'd be fairly confident in saying 'no'. Though I thought Martha sang it like it really was from her tradition.

I think it's partly just the power of the hymn in that particular context, grasping onto something from a byegone age in the midst of utter hopelesness...

...and the fact that she's a very good actor, of course!

This quacks me up.
I'm checking up on everyone because Chewy didn't let me near the computer
while I was in SF. I also have jet lag and Dave's breathing apparatus broke
and I cannot sleep. Anyway, I've finally finished Robert Fisk and have a goodie for you from SF. Are you coming north before Sweden, or should I post it? If you don't' respond, I'll have Dave ring you up (that didn't sound threatening....)Anyway, I'm going to try to sleep without pummeling him. I've merely asked him to stop breathing.

Hi Keri

Oh dear, hope they can get the breathing apparatus fixed quickly.

I don't know what I'm doing. I've been very indecisive about pre-Sweden holiday plans. I've been sort of planning on going on a cycling holiday either round England or up to Edinburgh where I would go to a bit of the Festival. I even had a vague itinerary sketched out in my head. But the current climate is making a cycling holiday look like a dubious proposition. So I don't know what I'm doing. Scotland's still a possibility though.
