For what its worth, most of the Orthodox in South Africa who were interested in discussing it seemed happy with this proposal. Perhaps you could encourage people in the UK to take this line, as it seems to obviate most of the pseudoproblems caused by looking at it the wrong way. Erastians of various stripes won't like it, of course, because they *want* the State to define marrage according to their own prejudices, and to impose that definition on everyone. But why *should* the State define marriage? All the state needs, surely, is to regulate the legal obligations that arise from such relationships and others that they haven't sought to define, but could register.
