Your comment about evolutionary explanations of animal behaviour, re the bears having fun, reminded me of this from Masson & McCarthy's 'When Elephants Weep':
[after quoting such an explanation] 'The view that the peahen CANNOT, on the one hand, be drawn to beauty, but CAN, on the other, think "Shiny feathers mean low parasite load -- I'll mate with this one so my chicks can benefit from his genes", is untenable.'
